The Department Of Space Sciences (DOSS) was formally established in 1996. DOSS began its activities (1994-1997) by offering specializations for Atmospheric and Space Sciences to the students of M. Sc. Physics and started its own M. Sc. Space Sciences program in 1998.
The M.Tech (Atmospheric Physics) program has been running in the Department of Physics since 1988. It was funded by UGC from 1988 to 1999. After the UGC funding was over it is run in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. From 2005 the M.Tech. program is shifted to this Department.
The research activities of Space & Atmospheric Physics Group in the Department of Physics had begun from its own inception in 1954 or so. The current interests of the DASS are in Cloud Microphysics (Laboratory and Field Experiments; and Modeling) , Quantitative precipitation forecasting, and Remote Sensing.
